Among my traditions in the sketchbook is sketching food, especially pastry, before eating. In Italy this summer I provided some pastry, but each person had to sketch before they ate.
As a demonstration I took a piece and sketched it with pencil, yellow brush pen, Sepia ink pen and purple marker. Limited tools are often useful in getting you to combine the colors in shadows on and off the subject. Treat pastry like a miniature landscape.
Note the top of the pastry looks whiter than the paper around it because of the contrast of the dark shadow.
